TOLKIEN FILKS - Lothlòrien Pie
by Lea Frost

(Tune: "American Pie" by Don McLean)

Comments: And now we come to another favorite of mine (except for the rather lame third verse). And yes, I am familiar with Weird Al Yankovic's "The Saga Begins." Why do you ask?

A long, long time ago,
I can still remember how the tales of Elves would make me smile.
And I knew if I did my best,
That I could sail into the West
And maybe I would touch the Blessed Isle.
The trek to Mordor made me shiver,
We braved the fire and crossed the river.
On dark Sauron's doorstep,
They couldn't take one more step.
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about how Frodo tried,
But something touched me deep inside,
The day the Third Age died.
So...

CHORUS: Bye bye to Lothlòrien Pie,
Took the Ring into the fire of the great Flaming Eye.
The last High Elves have bid this world goodbye,
Singing, in the West we never will die,
In the West we never will die.

Have you read the big Red Book?
Have you seen the Ring Isildur took
From the Dark Lord's burning hand?
When the Last Alliance marched to war
On the mighty fort of Barad-dûr,
And they believed that they could save their land.
And on that day dark Sauron fell,
But brave Gil-galad went down as well,
And Elendil met his end,
Isildur alone remained.
He was a valiant Nùmenorean lord
With a golden ring and a broken sword,
But he lost it all at Anduin's ford,
The day Isildur died.
I started singing...

CHORUS

Now for eighty years the Ring is found,
And the Eye of Sauron looks around,
But that's not how it used to be.
When the Halfling Sméagol betrayed his friend
For a ring he found in the river bed
With a power that came from ill decree.
But then Bilbo Baggins came along
And he stole the Ring before too long.
They played a riddle game;
Middle-earth was never the same.
And while the Wraiths went off to seek the Ring,
Frodo to Rivendell did it bring
With the help of Gondor's long-lost king,
But still the Dark Lord vied.
We were singing...

CHORUS

From Elrond's rooms to Balin's tomb
The Nine set off for the Crack of Doom,
The last and best chance of the West.
With Gandalf lost in Moria's mines,
Boromir paid dearly for his crime,
And the Lady of Lothlòrien passed the test.
On the battlefield of Pelennor,
We feared at last our time was o'er,
But our hope was born anew
When the horns of Rohan blew.
The Witch-king tried to claim the field,
But Éowyn refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the Witch-king died?
We started singing...

CHORUS

Oh, and there we were all in one place
To meet the Enemy face to face,
With no time left to start again.
While the Steward burned and the armies clashed,
The Ring-bearers toiled 'neath clouds of ash
'Cause fire is the Dark Lord's only friend.
Oh, and as we stood at Sauron's lair
Our hands were clenched in stark despair
When Mordor's messenger said
That our last hope was dead.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
While Samwise watched in anguished fright,
I saw Gollum laughing with delight,
The day that Sméagol died.
We were singing...

CHORUS

I met an Elf-maid fair of face,
And I asked her if she'd leave this place,
She just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the Havens Grey,
Where the waters gleamed in the light of day,
But the man there said the ships had sailed away.
In Minas Tirith the people sang,
The King was crowned, the bells they rang,
And joyous words were spoken,
For Sauron's power was broken.
But the three that I admire most,
With the two Ring-bearers and the Elvish host,
They set their sails for Valinor's coast,
The day the Third Age died.
And they were singing...

CHORUS

They were singing...

CHORUS
