From Númenor, from Westernesse they came
across the Sea to land in Middle-Earth,
with ruin behind, and many foes ahead;
in Forlindon they landed it is said.
In Arnor and in Gondor
they reigned for many years:
Elendil in the North-land;
his sons by southern seas.
At Norbury Elendil had his throne
with peace five score of years the land was blest;
then Sauron in his malice did invade:
the Ithil-tower fell beneath his sway.
The Elven-folk and West-men
united them to fight;
their armies joined in battle
to humble Mordor's might.
Then siege they laid against the fortress dark:
for seven years their forces ringed it round,
'til Sauron's hosts they finally subdued;
upon Mount Doom their enemy they slew.
But Gil-galad the Elf-lord
and North-king Elendil:
their lives were lost in battle;
in land of fear they fell.
